May 9, 2019 – SCRANTON – The University of Scranton is celebrating another successful Day of Giving, having surpassed its donor goal.
The Day of Giving is a community-wide event that began in 2015 and is run by the University Advancement 5.06 Team.
Alexandra Maier, Assistant Director of Annual Giving, said 5.06 weekend is a great way for the community to come together.
“Alumni, parents, students and friends of the University come together and show their Scranton pride and give back to the University,” Maier said.
The University reported an initial goal of 2,506 donors, recruited over three events between May 3 and May 6, the fifth annual Day of Giving weekend. The fundraising began on May 3 with regional happy hours for Royal alumni in cities across four states in the Northeast.
Royals continued the festivities at 9 a.m. May 4 on the Lackawanna Heritage Trail next to the Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., Athletics Campus. Over 200 runners representing nine athletic teams, scholarships and causes registered for the 5.06K race.
Joe Krisanda, Academic Systems Administrator, said he and his wife Tonya came out to support a University scholarship.
“One of the scholarships that the race benefits is for the computing sciences department so that’s what we’re running for,” Krisanda said.
The $20 registration fee for the community and $10 fee for students was tax deductible. Royals who ran counted as a donor toward the University’s goal.
Royal runners in 15 states wore purple on May 4 as they ran or walked the Virtual 5.06K, an online opportunity to donate from wherever they were.
On May 6, the official Day of Giving, Royals made their donations in person at the DeNaples Center while enjoying free popcorn and Rita’s Italian Ice.
At the conclusion of the weekend, the Rev. Herbert B. Keller, S.J., former interim president of the University, showed gratitude to the Scranton community for raising over $480,000.
“All of our donor challenges have been met, so thank you for showing that you are proud to be a Royal,” Keller said.
