Week 2, VIA Public Media

This week I got to see a lot more of Premiere and After Effects. I spent Tuesday keying out the background (the green screen) so that I could replace the green with the chosen background (shown above) for each particular spot. I had to import the phone bar into my sequence and put it on V2, so it would show over my talent. The empty blue box on the phone bar needed to have words, sort of like a headline of a news article or broadcast, that briefly summed up what the talent (Sarah) was saying in the 15 or 30 second spot. So, I used Legacy Titles to write a few words for each spot, and used point size, kerning, tracking and leading to get the words to fit into the tiny box. Finally, Neil taught me how to create a new black “color matte” (essentially a frame of just black) and set it to fade out right at the beginning and right at the end of every spot, which fixed an issue I was having where my cross dissolves looked ghostly because I didn’t cut in and out on a black shot.

Thursday I had finished exporting all my Tuesday promo spots, so I was allowed to move on to national spots. By using VIA’s login information on source.pbs.org, I was able to search for and download the spots that I needed, which in this case were 20 and 30 second promos for Poldark Season 5 Episodes 2 & 3 and Durrells in Corfu Season 4 Episodes 2 & 3. Like I learned last week, I then had to create lower thirds stating the air date and name of the show. I imported the tags (audio recorded in our radio studio by Paul Lazar), placed them and the lower thirds at the appropriate times and exported. Last, I entered my completed shows into VIA’s Production Database, which is essentially a Google Sheet that shows when certain shows are set to air.
