This week, in light of the events that have come up (namely BLM protests in nearly every U.S. city following the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis City police officer, among other events and deaths), we participated in #blackouttuesday and took a break from our regular content and interactions to #amplifymelanatedvoices . In other words, we wanted to join other companies, brands and individuals in silencing our own content and voices to provide more of a platform for BIPOC creators and creatives. So, I spent the week searching hashtags such as #blackcreatives , #blacklivesmatter , #amplifymelanatedvoices and similar tags to find content that we’d like to repost and sending DMs to the original creator to ask for permission.
Once I obtained permission, I would draft a caption for the repost that I felt best highlighted the original creators’ work best and sent it to Jillian for review. Before and after posting, I spent up to a half hour interacting with posts that used the same hashtags I was putting on my post so that they would interact back with my posts.
My boss also purchased an anti-racism webinar for me, which I watched and subsequently posted to our Linktree and posted about on IG (with permission) to drive our followers to the same webinar.
